Cellophane, Mr. Cellophane - Simple Saturday

We painted today with some homemade watercolors. He really slathered it on! LOL! While the paper was still wet, we layed some crumpled up cellophane on top of our painting. We set it aside and let it dry. We then removed the cellophane and discovered the fun geometric shapes left on our paper.

Accidental Discovery:
Jacques Brandenberger, a Swiss chemist, was not trying to make something to cover your pork chops in 1908. He worked in a French textile firm and was looking for a way to make a stain proof tablecloth. He tried coating the cloth with a thin sheet of viscose film. No one would buy the tablecloths, but Brandenberger realized that the sheet of film held possibilities. It took him ten years to develop a machine that would produce what he named cellophane. He patented the production process and called the company La Cellophane. The name came from combining "cello," from cellulose, with "Phane," from the French word diaphane, which means transparent. Cellophane became available to the public in 1919. In 1927 a waterproof lacquer coating was developed that made it more useful. With the lacquer coating, cellophane could be used to package food, since it was airtight and waterproof.

Popcorn Bag - Simple Saturday

We were in a store yesterday. One we frequent often (most of the workers know and love my Little Mister)! On this particular day, he had found a treasure. One that astonished everyone we saw. Why, you may ask. Simply because it wasn't a toy. No car, truck, coveted house or even clothes or boots.
He found a small bag for popcorn. You would think it was made of gold. He was so proud of his treasure. He showed it to every lucky person who happened to pass our buggy.
Once we got home with his $0.15 prize, he piled up in a recliner and happily watched Mickey Mouse and munched popcorn. Obviously it tasted much better when served in a small paper bag!

Something small and insufficient to others may be the very thing to make us smile!
Lord, help me learn to be happy with the small things in life!

A Ladybug's Birthday - Simple Saturday

We were exploring in my Mom's backyard the other day and chanced upon some Ladybug pupa attached to a Mimosa Tree. Little Mister noticed them right away.
We carefully gathered some of the leaf stalks with the attached pupa and brought them home to put in a habitat and await their "arrival".  Surprise, after one day, we had 5 new ladybugs!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
The lighter colored (yellowish) bug has just emerged. Her wings are translucent; It will take as
long as 24 hours for her to develop her characteristic spots. She has her wings out to help them dry and harden.

He wanted to tickle the bug's belly!

Our imagination allows us to be anything, do anything and sit around a tiny table while drinking tea with a bunch of grapes!
Play on!

Make Your Own Picture Book - Simple Saturday

So simple yet so much fun. And think of the memories this will make later on down the road.

We simply started with some folded sheets of copier paper. I handed Little Mister some crayons and asked him to draw me some pictures. Then, I asked him what each thing was and wrote exactly what he said below each drawing.
Some were just down right funny and I marveled at his imagination!
We finished it up with a construction paper cover which he decorated as well!
