Hot Snow - Science Play

Hot Snow 

(A.K.A. Elephant's Toothpaste)

My Little Mister was fascinated by the "snow" that bubbled out of the bottle!

He wanted to make snowballs and snow angels!

The experiment was fun, but he was disappointed we could not get in it.

The Science behind the play:

You are actually making foam AND heat.

The foam here is special because each tiny foam bubble is filled with oxygen (O2). The yeast acted as a catalyst - or helper - to remove the oxygen from the Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2). Since this happens very fast, it created LOTS and LOTS of bubbles. 

You might have also noticed the bottle getting warm. This experiment created a reaction called an Exothermic reaction. Simply meaning it released or created heat.

The foam created is just water, soap and oxygen so it is easily cleaned up and any remaining liquid in the bottle can be poured down the sink!

Dot-to-Dot Letters

We did some pre-writing practice today.

I used small stickers to make a dot-to-dot of upper and lower case letters on each sheet.

I made one sheet for each letter of his name.

Little Mister used a highlighter to follow the dots and complete the letter.

Some he did really well. Others, he circled the stickers or just shaded the space between them. It was a pretty good start I think!

Pretend Play - Post Office

With all the excitement from the Holidays of sending and receiving cards, it only seemed the natural next step to make our own Post Office.

I covered a smallish box with blue and white construction paper. Little Mister decorated the sides with all kinds of things that 'carry mail' (i.e. trucks, trains, planes, boats...)!

We used our abundance of Christmas stickers as stamps.

To add a little language learning to this play time, I added names on the front of each envelop. We mailed the letter N to Nonnie and the letter G to Granny and so on.

We delivered the mail with Zoo trucks and a Larry-copter. 
The fun is endless!

Protect Their Imaginations

My pastor was teaching in the book of Ephesians the other night. He said something that struck a cord in me and has been bouncing around my head ever since.

God made a check list for us to follow when putting on his whole armor. In part, the Belt of Truth to protect our loins. What are the loins but the reproductive part of us. In the Hebrew, it can also mean our imaginations. We "dream" things up and then act upon those dreams to make it a reality. Much like an architect imagined the skyscraper; the same as an artist imagining what will become of the lump of clay they are starting to mold.
The hard part these days is guarding the imaginations of our young ones.

In a world so bent on corruption, how can we afford to let our guards down where our children are concerned.

Violent video games, movies, books, even cartoons all seek to distort our children's imaginations.

To corrupt them in a way that their imaginations are no longer pure and innocent.

I have begun to pray a covering over my son's mind from the evil of this world. Purity of mind is such a precious thing. I constantly marvel at the workings of my Little Mister's imagination. He is so loving and sweet. 

Therefore put on God's complete armor, that you may be able to resist and stand your ground on the evil day and having done all, to stand.

We made a Belt of Truth and read the scripture.
